Soraya Esfandiary-Bakhtiary (22 June 1932 – 26 October 2001) was the queen consort of Iran as the second wife of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, whom she married in 1951. Their marriage suffered many pressures, particularly when it became clear that she was infertile. She rejected the Shah’s suggestion that he might take a second wife in order to produce an heir, as he rejected her suggestion that he might abdicate in favor of his half-brother. As the daughter of a German Christian mother, Soraya was mistrusted by Shiite clerics; she was also resented by the Shah’s possessive mother. In March 1958, the Shah wept as he announced their divorce. The British Ambassador claimed that Soraya was the Shah's only true love. After a brief career as an actress, and a liaison with Italian film director Franco Indovina, Soraya lived alone in Paris until her death. Soraya was the elder child and only daughter of Khalil Esfandiary Bakhtiary (1901–1983), a Bakhtiari nobleman and Iranian ambassador to West Germany in the 1950s, and his Russian-born German wife Eva Karl (1906–1994). She was born in the English Missionary Hospital in Isfahan on 22 June 1932. She had one sibling, a younger brother, Bijan (1937–2001). Her family had long been involved in the Iranian government and diplomatic corps. An uncle, Sardar Assad, was a leader in the Persian Constitutional Revolution of the early 20th century. Soraya was raised in Berlin and Isfahan, and educated in London and Switzerland. In 1948, Soraya was introduced to the recently divorced Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, by Forough Zafar Bakhtiary, a close relative of Soraya's, via a photograph taken by Goodarz Bakhtiary, in London, per Forough Zafar's request. At the time Soraya had completed high school at a Swiss finishing school and was studying the English language in London. They were soon engaged: the Shah gave her a 22.37 carat (4.474 g) diamond engagement ring. Soraya married the Shah at Marble Palace, Tehran, on 12 February 1951. Originally the couple had planned to wed on 27 December 1950, but the ceremony was postponed due to the bride being ill. Although the Shah announced that guests should donate money to a special charity for the Iranian poor, among the wedding gifts were a mink coat and a desk set with black diamonds sent by Joseph Stalin; a Steuben glass Bowl of Legends designed by Sidney Waugh and sent by U.S. President and Mrs. Truman; and silver Georgian candlesticks from King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. The 2,000 guests included Aga Khan III. The ceremony was decorated with 1.5 tonnes of orchids, tulips and carnations, sent by plane from the Netherlands. Entertainment included an equestrian circus from Rome. The bride wore a silver lamé gown studded with pearls and trimmed with marabou stork feathers, designed for the occasion by Christian Dior. Of all the Shah's many women, it is generally believed that Soraya was the "true love" of his life as she was the one he loved the most. Soraya later wrote about herself and Iran: "I was a dunce. I knew next to nothing of the geography, the legends of my country; nothing of its history, nothing of the Muslim religion". Soraya's upbringing had been entirely German and Catholic, which left her with a mixed identity, and made her the object of much distrust in Iran with Muslim clerics saying the Shah should not marry this "half-European girl" who was not raised a Muslim. Soraya wrote: "The feeling of being both Christian and Muslim, but at the same time of being neither one nor the other has engraved in my flesh two divergent poles between which my existence has unfolded. The one is methodically European, the other savagely Persian". Following the marriage, Soraya headed the family charity in Iran. Soraya's marriage was troubled as Mohammad Reza's mother and sisters all saw her as a rival for his love just as they had with his first wife Princess Fawzia Fuad of Egypt, and continually snubbed and inflicted petty humiliations on her. Soraya hated Ernest Perron, the Shah's best friend and private secretary. Soraya called Perron a "homosexual who detested women, all women" and who "spread poison around the palace as well as our own quarters". She wrote that Perron was a "cunning, perfidious and Machiavellian" man who "roused hatred, stirred gossip, reveled in every intrigue". Much to her disgust, Mohammad Reza was "fascinated with this diabolical Swiss" who professed to be a "philosopher, poet, and a prophet"; the two men met every morning to discuss all the affairs of state in French as Perron was the man whose advice the Shah valued the most, and, as Soraya soon learned, other matters were discussed as well. Much to her revulsion, Perron visited her and made a series of what she called very "lewd" remarks and vulgar questions about her sex life with the Shah, which led her to throw him out of the Marble Palace in her fury.

Soraya Esfandiary-Bakhtiary, auch Soraya Esfandiari-Bachtiari, * 22. Juni 1932 in Isfahan, Iran (Persien); † 25. Oktober 2001 in Paris) war von 1951 bis 1958 die Ehefrau des Schahs Mohammad Reza Pahlavi von Persien (seit 1935 Iran). Ehe mit Mohammad Reza Pahlavi und Scheidung Am 12. Februar 1951 heiratete Soraya im Golestanpalast von Teheran Schah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, den letzten Schah des heutigen Iran. Soraya wurden der Titel „Prinzessin“ und die Anrede „Kaiserliche Hoheit“ verliehen. Während der Ehe mit Schah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi führte sie den Namen Soraya Pahlavi. Anlässlich eines Besuches des Schahs und seiner Gattin in Deutschland wurde sie mit der „Sonderstufe des Großkreuzes“ des Verdienstordens der Bundesrepublik Deutschland ausgezeichnet. Da die Ehe nicht den erhofften Thronerben hervorbrachte, wurde sie am 6. April 1958 aus Gründen der Staatsräson geschieden. Soraya hatte den Iran bereits im Februar 1958 verlassen und war zunächst zu ihren Eltern nach Köln gezogen. Die Scheidung inspirierte die belgische Schriftstellerin Françoise Mallet-Joris, ein Lied zu schreiben (Je veux pleurer comme Soraya – Ich möchte wie Soraya weinen). Es wurde gesungen von Marie-Paule Belle. Als Kaiserin war sie oft Thema der Regenbogenpresse, die sie die „Deutsche auf dem Pfauenthron“ nannte. Dies ist jedoch unzutreffend, da die Krönung nicht auf dem (verschollenen) Pfauenthron, sondern auf dem Nader-Thron stattfand und die Pahlavi-Schahs ansonsten einen schlichten, achämenidischen Vorbildern nachempfundenen Thron nutzten. Princess Soraya died in Paris last October, at the age of 69. She was a descendant of the powerful Iranian tribe of Bakhtiar and married the Shah of Iran, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi. Following their divorce the princess lived in a number of different cities around the world such as Madrid, Monte Carlo, Rome, Cannes, as well as Paris. The auction, set to last three days, has an estimated value of three million (M) Euros. But auctioneer Pierre-Yves Lefèvre believes the jewellery has aroused a lot of interest and will go for even higher. Escribiria en sus memorias ..me sentia en un camino de espinas y atrapada en una jaula de oro, fue repudiada al no poder engrendar heredero a la corona y prometio partir al exilio para nunca mas volver , su salida del palacio fue apoteosica , París y Marbella fueron los ejes de su nueva vida. la tragedia convirtió a Soraya en objeto de deseo de importantes hombres de la época El director de cine italiano Franco Indovina, supo conquistar a tan triste corazón haciéndola olvidarPero cuando parecía haber conseguido superar tan dolorosa humillación, la tragedia volvió a golpearla de una forma cruel e inmisericorde, como si poco hubiera sido su sufrir , un accidente de aviación le arrebató a quien iba a convertirla en esposa. Creyó volverse loca y en medio de su locura deseó morir. Se llegó a publicar que intentó suicidarse ,quizo cambiar amor por dinero . Desde ese día, no fue necesario preguntar por qué estaba triste la princesa , viajera de su soledad, como una hermosa leyenda nómada tuvo todo lo que una mujer puede aspirar : juventud, riqueza, belleza y un matrimonio feliz, mientras duró, con uno de los hombres, en su momento, más ricos y poderosos de la tierra, el Sha de Persia, comentarios de los escritores de aquella epoca .. era una mujer muy bella ,inteligente y culta que haya conocido en mi vida , hablaba Aleman ,Frances ,Ingles , Ruso, Español y Persa. se dejaba admirar con la morbosidad que inspira tanta tragedia en mujer tan bella . poco tiempo, antes de su muerte, Soraya pudo al fin revelar el secreto en sus memorias privadas: ella no fue infértil como tal ha sido señalada por los médicos cercanos al Sha, sino que ellos inescrupulosamente manipularon los exámenes médicos de ella para convencer al Sha sobre la supuesta infertilidad de Soraya, perjudicada por la mentira creíble montada por aquellos galenos y de ahí vino el inesperado divorcio ,exitia un matriarcado dentro del palacio lo cual veian en ella la un peligro inmimente siendo esteril . continuó con esa vida nómade del jet-set, fue a menudo una de las diez mujeres más elegantes del mundo y su rostro de "princesa triste", nunca pudo borralo,paseaba su tragedia, la mayor q una mujer pudiera sufrir su lugar lo ocuparia Farah Diba ,sin pena ni gloria era la princesa con muchos otoños y ninguna primavera Despues de muchos años aparecio muerta en su mansion de Paris ,siempre quizo saber porq el destino se habia ensañado con ella .

Soraya Esfandiary-Bakhtiari o S.A.I. la Princesa Soraya de Irán (Isfahán, 22 de junio de 1932-París, 26 de octubre de 2001) fue la segunda esposa de Mohammad Reza Pahleví, último Sah o emperador de Irán. Hija de Khalil Khan Esfandiary-Bakhtiari (1901-1983), noble de la tribu bajtiarí de Irán del sur y embajador de Irán ante la Alemania Occidental, y de su esposa alemana, Eva Karl (1906-1994). Tuvo un hermano menor, Bijan Esfandiary-Bakhtiari (1937-2001), que murió pocos días después que ella. Mohammad Reza Pahleví y Esfandiary se casaron en 1951 y se divorciaron en 1958 ante la infertilidad de la emperatriz. Se le otorgó el tratamiento y título nobiliario de «Su Alteza Imperial (S.A.I.) la Princesa Soraya del Irán», tras su divorcio. Primero se estableció en Roma (Italia) en su exilio. La princesa Soraya intentó una breve carrera como actriz, protagonizando la película I tre volti (1965), con cuyo director, Franco Indovina, mantuvo una relación sentimental. También participó en la película She (1965). Tras la muerte de Indovina en un accidente de aviación, la princesa se convirtió en un personaje asiduo de la prensa del corazón que la denominó «la princesa de los ojos tristes». A raíz de ese fallecimiento de su amigo especial, dejó para siempre Italia para radicarse en Francia. Dos años antes de morir, Soraya pudo al fin revelar el secreto en sus memorias privadas: ella no fue infértil tal como lo han señalado los médicos cercanos al shah, sino que ellos manipularon sin escrúpulos los exámenes médicos de ella para convencer al shah sobre la supuesta infertilidad de Soraya, perjudicada por la mentira creíble montada por aquellos galenos, y de ahí vino el inesperado divorcio. La princesa Soraya de Irán murió en su apartamento en París, con 69 años. Está enterrada en Westfriedhof, un cementerio de Múnich (Alemania), junto a su familia. En 2002, su tumba fue profanada por los radicales musulmanes con pintadas acusándola de «parásito social». El divorcio de Soraya del shah inspiró a la compositora francesa Françoise Mallet-Jorris para escribir Je veux pleurer comme Soraya (Quiero llorar como Soraya). El cultivador francés François Meilland cultivó un nuevo girasol en honor a la antigua reina, al que llamó Emperatriz Soraya.
