Nagoro is a village in the Iya Valley on the island of Shikoku in Tokushima Prefecture in Japan. It is known for the large number of realistic scarecrows positioned throughout the village, which have made it a tourist attraction.

Note: This is an updated version of a video published earlier. The village of Nagoro, Japan, is filled with human-sized creepy dolls. There are no children left - the dolls are the only companions for the 27 elderly residents who remain. Japan's population is decreasing, and this spells trouble for its economy. There are more deaths than births, while younger folks would rather stay single - or marry a hologram wife - than have kids. Meanwhile Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has declared a "womenomics" policy and revised immigration law, to bolster the workforce. But is it too little too late? Additional photos and information: 🤍 Tsukimi Ayano came back to her village Nagoro in 2002, after a long leave for Osaka. Upon returning, she started decorating the village with scarecrows. Scarecrows ("Kakashi" in Japanese) are an old tradition in Japan, but Tsukimi made them into a beautiful outdoors exhibition. But in 2019, Nagoro is not the village Tsukimi remembers from her childhood, when 300 lived there. Only twenty seven people currently live in the village. The local school has been closed for several years, and its gym was turned into a huge showroom of kakashi. Although vivid and intriguing, Nagoro's scarecrows conveying the essence of a monument to life and an era long gone. Nagoro, with its charming and sad aspects, tells the story of many villages in the world – a massive wave of vanishing culture. Young generations choose urban upon rural life, consolidating to global codes, leaving unique cultural characteristics behind. Can our rural world survive and revive? Not a vlog, no intrusive faces or talking, pure Japan only. One of my goals was village in the middle of Shikoku mountains - village of scarecrows. Technically this is not a village but area Nagoro of Miyoshi city. Officially village has only one permanent citizen but there are some other people who live here temporary. But permanently living old woman decided to recreate people previously living in that place as scarecrows. You may find here more than 100 scarecrows. Sudah 18 tahun tidak pernah terdengar lagi tangisan bayi di desa Nagoro, sebuah desa terpencil di pegunungan jepang yang menyita banyak perhatian. Desa ini mendapata banyak perhatian, bukan karena keindahan alamnya yang menawan, melainkan karena desa ini hanya dihuni oleh para lansia. Dengan putusnya generasi penerus, Sekolah Dasar di desa Nagoro juga telah ditutup sejak 2012, ketika sekolah dasar di desa ini meluluskan dua siswa terkahirnya. Desa ini pun seakan menjadi tempat khusus untuk lansia.

Nagoro is an eccentric and somewhat eerie village on Shikoku Island in southern Japan. Instead of people, it’s filled with scarecrows that resemble the former occupants. Each of them has a unique facial expression and the village is a major tourist attraction. Homes and shops are closed. The school no longer has any students. There is one main street that runs through the village but there is hardly any traffic. There’s something weird happening in the sleepy Japanese mountain hamlet of Nagoro. Deaths, a declining national birthrate and depopulation have seen countryside communities like it whither. For years, the young have been abandoning villages like Nagoro, heading for the cities in search of better job opportunities, acutely aware that whatever dreams they have will surely fade and die were they to remain. But dreams often give way to the cruel realities of life. Some the of the young people may turn to a life of prostitution, servicing drunken salarymen doing their best to avoid neurotic wives and emotionally distant children. Today Nagaro is home to a lonely number of just 35 survivors — those who have neither the means or wish to leave. Their only company, a growing legion of canvas mannequins who outnumber the living three-to-one. These dolls are the work of Tsukimi Ayano, a 65-year-old woman who has returned to Nagoro to care for her elderly father, having moved to Osaka decades ago. Tsukimi is one of the town’s youngest residents. “They bring back memories,” she says of the scarecrows which leer at visitors from unchanging vantage points. Their dead eyes seeing your every move; their strange, unnatural poses making you feel ill at ease. “That old lady used to come and chat and drink tea. That old man used to love to drink sake and tell stories. It reminds me of the old times, when they were still alive and well, she told a reporter from the Associated Press. There is little sign Nagoro’s population will ever be replenished. It is a museum honoring a better time when town’s like it buzzed with activity. A long, memorable climb of 1500m in altitude takes us deep into the wild heart of the Island. Completely out of the blue we stumble upon a village inhabited by hundreds of dolls. Nagoro's human villagers are slowly fading away leaving a fairytale scene of life they imagined. A siren sends out a distress signal during nightfall and we hurry to find another place to shelter from the elements... Nagoro Village is a small, remote village located in the Iya Valley of Tokushima Prefecture, Japan. The village has gained international attention in recent years due to the unique art project of a local resident, Tsukimi Ayano. Tsukimi Ayano started creating life-size dolls to replace the dwindling population of the village. The dolls are made to resemble the former residents of the village who have passed away or moved away, and they are placed in various locations throughout the village, including on the streets, in gardens, and even in abandoned homes. The dolls have become a popular attraction, drawing visitors from around the world to the otherwise quiet and secluded village. As of 2021, there are reportedly over 350 dolls in Nagoro Village, outnumbering the living population of around 20 people. The village itself is located in a mountainous area, with beautiful natural scenery, including the Yoshino River and Oboke Gorge.
