Explore the shadowy interior of Seti I’s temple at Abydos, the only large ancient Egyptian temple with an intact roof. It is one of the most mysterious temples in all of Egypt, made even more mysterious by the presence of the Osireion located just behind it. Shot in light-gathering large-format 4K that rivals being there in person, this exploration contains some of the longest duration moving shots ever made inside the temple.
Considered one of the most important sites in Egypt, the sacred city of Abydos was the site of many ancient temples, including Umm el-Qa'ab, a royal necropolis where early pharaohs were entombed. Abydos may be the most mysterious ancient place in Egypt, if not the world. As old as the Nile civilization itself, it is the supposed burial place of Osiris, the god who was Egypt’s mythic first king. Its ruins, though filled with clues, never quite give up their secrets. Exploring it requires a journey by road, first across desert, then through towns and villages overflowing with the activity of everyday Egyptian life. The ancient ruins of Abydos are serene and secretive, but the way there and back is filled with the action and excitement always present on the thoroughfares and byways of Egypt. Shot in full-frame 4K, this is a distortion-free view of the scenic and eventful roads, towns, and villages between Luxor and Abydos, and the most intact monuments at the site of the ancient city and its necropolis. Beyond two brief instances amounting to a few seconds, none of the footage has appeared in previous videos. Abydos in southern Egypt has long been known as the location of Egypt’s first great royal necropolis, with tombs of kings from Narmer at the beginning of the First Dynasty to Khasekhemwy at the end of the Second. It is less well known, however, that the tombs themselves were only components of a much broader and equally long-lasting pattern of royal use of the site. Monumental architecture and ritual performance quite apart from the tombs served both to define the nature of Egyptian kingship and to position the king in both the world of the living and the realm of the eternal. The latest findings from ongoing excavations at Abydos will be presented and the unique significance of the site in early Egypt discussed. Matthew Douglas Adams has led the search for evidence of Egypt’s first kings at Abydos for more than twenty years. He is Senior Research Scholar in Egyptian archaeology and Director of Abydos Archaeology at the Institute of Fine Arts of New York University and holds a dual Ph.D. in anthropology and Egyptology from the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to his scholarly publications, his work has been featured in the New York Times, National Geographic Magazine, The New Yorker, and in a number of television documentaries. His experience of the Egyptian revolution of 2011 and its aftermath feature in The Buried by noted author Peter Hessler (Penguin, 2019).

Abydos is a city west of El Balina, Sohag, and it was one of the ancient cities in Upper Egypt. Most archaeologists agree that it is the first capital of Egypt at the end of the pre-dynastic period and the first four dynasties, and it dates back to 5 thousand years. It is located between Assiut and Luxor near Qena. It was a holy city called Greeks tennis. Currently, it is called Al-Araba Al-Madfuna (Balina), and it is about 11 kilometers from the Nile. It has the Temple of Seti I and the Temple of Ramses II, both of which are distinguished by prominent ancient Egyptian inscriptions. This city was the main center for the worship of the god Osiris.

The Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities have announced the discovery of new architectural features in the temple of Ramesses II, also known as Ramesses the Great in Abydos, one of Ancient Egypt’s most important cities. New York University’s Archaeological Mission in Egypt unearthed a royal hall or palace annexed to the temple, meaning the plan of the temple will now change for the first time in more than 160 years since the temple’s discovery. The experts say it will undoubtedly help with our understanding of the development of temple palaces during the 19th dynasty of Egyptian history. The archaeologists also found a second room, which included the base of a sandstone column as well as sandstone steps bearing the name of Ramesses II. Head of the archaeological mission, Sameh Eskandar, said that it is the first time for a team to discover foundation stones bearing the name of the King, Ramesses II. The cartouches appear on all four cornerstones of the temple, showing Ramses II’s birth and throne names painted in a golden colour. They are surmounted with double feathers with a sun disk in between, and beneath them a decorative gold sign. This is a very rare archaeological discovery. Watch the video to learn more. Ya so Abydos is one trippy place. Within Abydos, is The Osireion is a temple within a temple complex, and seems to be far older than the surrounding temple complex. There are insane megalithic blocks and structures throughout The Osireion which really makes you question just how much we know about the past. The Osireion also houses the famous "Flower of Life" etching, which to be honest is maybe the least interesting thing about this whole place. Abydos es el nombre de una población al oeste del Río Nilo, al noroeste de Luxor. Ahí se alza una de las construcciones más enigmáticas del Alto Egipto, cuyas inscripciones han confundido a la arqueología convencional.
